When tech giant Google describes careers in IT, they say you will, “Do cool things that matter”. IT professionals are transforming businesses every day, and they enjoy careers that are rich in variety.
But how do you get started? Our IT recruitment specialists suggest these tips:
1. Get a head start. An IT qualification will set you up well for a career in IT but, before you qualify, get some practical experience under your belt too. Check out university and Polytech platforms where work experience and internship opportunities are posted to get ahead of the game.
2. Apply for graduate programs. These can be a fast track to IT career progression. Programs are usually filled a year in advance, so be proactive and apply early.
3. Talk to your IT department. Universities and Polytechs have their own internal IT departments and regularly offer internship opportunities for students.
4. Contact start-ups for internships. Many start-ups are short on IT resources and would be very grateful for an undergraduate or graduate to come in and help them. You gain practical experience and contacts; they gain an extra pair of hands. It’s a win-win.
5. Attend careers events. Universities and Polytechs host events where students can meet prospective tech employers. Go to these, listen to the speakers, go to the network session afterwards and introduce yourself.
6. Throw your hat in the ring. As Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg said to CNN: "Don't discount yourself, no matter what you're doing. Everyone has a unique perspective that they can bring to the world." So apply for lots of IT roles. Every time you apply, you improve your odds of securing a role.
7. Think outside the box. Prospective employers will be impressed if you can demonstrate an interest in IT beyond work. Do you have hobbies, such as coding, that involve IT? Do you have broader business skills, such as sales, that IT employers might value? Mention these on your CV.
8. Keep learning. When you graduate, your learning has only just begun. Tech professionals constantly upskill to keep pace with change. Check out training programs from organisations like General Assembly to increase your chances of employment.
9. Talk to the experts. Approach IT professionals and ask their advice. If you’re not sure of how or who to contact. IT Meetups are a great way to start networking in the industry.
10. Be flexible. You may not land your dream tech job on day one – so be open to entry-level opportunities to get your started. Help desk roles, for example, are a great way to get your foot in the door.
