About the Opportunity Lead financial strategy at a boutique mutual with big ambitions. MAS, an award-winning insurance and investment mutual, is seeking a visionary Chief Financial Officer to join its executive team in Wellington or Auckland.

Combining over 100 years of heritage with bold innovation, MAS is well underway with its digital transformation journey and refreshed strategy to redefine what it means to deliver for Members and ensure a sustainable organisation for decades to come.

As New Zealand's best-kept secret in the financial services sector, MAS invests in its people, its communities and its charitable arm, MAS Foundation.

The CFO will play a critical role in guiding financial performance, driving organisational transformation, and leading digital modernisation across finance. This is an opportunity to influence strategic decisions at an organisation where financial leadership directly enhances member value and shapes the future of a purpose-led financial services provider.

What you’ll do

The CFO will lead MAS’s financial strategy while acting as a strategic business partner across the organisation. Key responsibilities include:

  • Connect financial strategy to Member value, ensuring decisions, investments, and capital allocation directly support MAS’s purpose and long-term member outcomes.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO, Board, and senior leadership team by providing commercial insights and strategic decision support.
  • Lead end-to-end digital financial transformation by modernising systems and implementing technologies such as AI-enabled analytics to improve forecasting, reporting automation, scenario planning, and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure robust governance and compliance across statutory reporting, internal controls, treasury, tax, regulatory obligations, and ESG reporting.
  • Oversee disciplined investment and capital allocation, setting hurdle rates, tracking ROI, and managing reinsurance activities to support financial resilience.
  • Build trusted external partnerships with banks, reinsurers, rating agencies, auditors, actuaries, regulators, and industry bodies to support MAS’s financial strength and reputation.
  • Collaborate across business units - including actuarial, underwriting, risk, and technology- to strengthen commercial decision-making and support wider organisational transformation.

What you bring

  • Proven CFO or senior finance leadership experience in regulated financial services or insurance.
  • Expertise in capital management, reinsurance oversight, performance measurement, compliance, and ESG reporting.
  • Strong capability in digital transformation and experience adopting modern technologies and analytics within finance functions.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills across boards, regulators, and technical stakeholders.
  • An inclusive leadership style that builds collaborative, high-performing teams and supports staff wellbeing and development.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications with Chartered Accountant status (CAANZ or equivalent).
