Senior Financial Accountant

As a Financial Accountant, you will play a crucial role in providing timely and accurate accounting services. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include leading the preparation of financial statements, managing external audits, coordinating budget updates, overseeing financial reporting, maintaining tax compliance standards, providing technical advice to finance staff and managers, and assisting with FMIS oversight. You will also have opportunities to mentor and coach across the financial accounting team. The offices are centrally located with flexible working options.

The ideal candidate for this Financial Accountant role will bring a wealth of experience in financial accounting roles within large or complex organisations. Your strong knowledge of public sector-specific accounting standards, proficiency in using IT systems in a financial context, sound understanding of taxation compliance requirements, and ability to build effective business relationships will be key to your success in this role.

What you'll do:

• Lead the preparation of financial statements for the annual report and manage the external audit process
• Contribute to the co-ordination and completion of external Budget update briefings to Ministers and returns required by Treasury
• Provide oversight of the monthly, annual and other financial reporting both internal and external
• Maintain a high standard of tax and accounting standard compliance for the Ministry
• Provide technical (financial accounting) advice to Finance staff and managers
• Assist the leadership oversight of the financial transactions processed in the Financial Management Information Systems
• Maintain integrity of all relevant data provided to CFISnet.

What you'll bring:

• Strong knowledge and understanding of Public Finance Act, government budget processes and public sector-specific accounting standards
• Experience using information technology, financial information systems and software in a financial context
• Good knowledge of Microsoft suite especially Excel
• Sound understanding of taxation compliance requirements
• Ability to build and maintain effective business relationships within an organisation
• Membership of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand or equivalent
