Systems Financial Accountant

A unique opportunity has arisen for a Systems and Financial Accountant to join a public sector organisation in Wellington where you will have ownership or the organisations FMIS from an accounting perspective.

This pivotal role offers you the chance to take sole responsibility for maintaining the integrity of financial systems while driving continuous improvement initiatives that align with best practice. You will be empowered to provide expert advice on financial systems and accounting matters, support key reporting processes, and play an integral part in enabling organisational success.

What you'll do:

  • Take sole charge of maintaining the integrity and stability of the organisation’s Financial Management Information System (Technology One), ensuring robust controls and documentation are always in place.
  • Lead the implementation of new financial system functions as well as upgrades to new releases, ensuring seamless transitions and minimal disruption to business operations.
  • Administer all aspects of financial systems including month-end and year-end processes, interface management, chart of accounts maintenance, budgeting models, and forecasting tools.
  • Develop and maintain automated processes such as cost allocations and interfaces with other internal systems like contract management and payroll platforms.
  • Design, develop, and maintain comprehensive reports, queries, and dashboards that provide actionable insights for both internal stakeholders and external reporting requirements.
  • Provide a responsive help desk facility for users across the organisation, delivering user training sessions to build capability and confidence in financial system use.
  • Maintain user schedules and manage system licences efficiently to ensure compliance with policy requirements.
  • Conduct ad hoc data analysis and prepare reports to support Official Information Act requests, written parliamentary questions, and general staff queries.
  • Support interim and year-end audits by preparing accurate documentation and collaborating closely with Senior Financial Accountants and Management Accountants.
  • Offer expert advice on the potential impacts of system changes on financial management processes, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives.

What you bring:

  • Experience working with Technology One as a systems accountant
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a successful team within a large organisation or corporate environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills enabling you to communicate clearly with diverse audiences both internally and externally.
  • Proven experience explaining complex information in accessible ways tailored to different stakeholder needs.
  • Strong analytical skills with a track record of interpreting varied data sources to provide sound recommendations.
  • Experience interacting effectively with internal clients as well as external partners or agencies.
  • Capacity to manage competing priorities under pressure while consistently meeting deadlines without close supervision.
  • Sound judgement combined with initiative when working independently on sensitive or high-impact tasks.
