Our client is seeking a dedicated and experienced Principal Advisor for their Planning department. This role is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction of a leading organisation, working closely with senior management to implement and improve planning functions at all levels. The successful candidate will be instrumental in aligning planning with organisational strategic outcomes, providing high-quality advice and support to senior managers, and mentoring junior staff. This role offers the chance to make a significant impact within a trusted public sector agency that values collaboration, commitment, and understanding.

What you'll do:

As a Principal Advisor - Planning, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of our client's organisation. You will work closely with the Manager Planning to enhance overall planning capability and organisational maturity. Your expertise will be crucial in implementing planning frameworks that foster growth and understanding at all levels of the organisation. You will become a trusted advisor, influencing key stakeholders across the organisation and providing high-quality planning advice to senior managers. Additionally, you will have the rewarding opportunity to mentor junior staff, helping them grow their capabilities within a wider strategic context.

  • Support the Manager Planning in growing overall planning capability and organisational maturity
  • Lead the implementation of planning frameworks that support growth in understanding at all organisational levels
  • Influence key stakeholders across the organisation, becoming a trusted advisor as a subject matter expert in planning disciplines
  • Provide high-quality planning advice and support to senior managers
  • Mentor and guide junior staff, enhancing their overall capability and wider strategic context
  • Work closely with other members of the Strategy and Performance directorate, regional/district management, and planning personnel


What you bring:

The ideal candidate for the Principal Advisor - Planning role brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from similar roles. You have proven your ability to design and implement effective planning frameworks that can be applied across all levels of an organisation. Your interpersonal skills are highly developed, enabling you to influence a diverse range of stakeholders effectively. You have a track record of teaching, coaching, and mentoring others, and you're proactive in building strong relationships across an organisation. Your ability to engage in high-level critical thinking allows you to identify the links between complex issues.

  • Possess a relevant tertiary qualification or five or more years’ experience working in a comparable position
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing planning frameworks applicable to people at all levels of an organisation
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to influence diverse range of stakeholders
  • Proven teaching, coaching, and mentoring skills
  • Ability to proactively build strong relationships across an organisation
  • Engage in high-level critical thinking to identify links between complex issues
