A well-crafted CV is a key component in your career search and one which requires effort and attention to ensure it represents you in the best possible way. Outlined below are a few key tips to creating an attractive and effective CV.
The length of your CV should be no more than four pages. Your CV should act as a brief introduction to your background, with further detail to be provided as your application progresses. The inability to provide information in a concise fashion can be a negative indicator of your ability to communicate effectively.
Chronology is key. Career history and educational qualifications should be listed from most recent to the oldest. Within the role detail, prioritise the infomraiton which is of most relevance to the particular role you are applying for so that the person reviewing your details can easily assess your suitability.
When listing responsibilities, ensure to provide detail that is relevant and explain the value of each of them. Avoid acronyms or terms that are specfic to your employer and won't easily translate into another organisation.
Remember to include your achievements as well as your responsibilities for all roles that you have detailed. Achievements should be projects that you undertook that were outside of the general scope of your role which will indicate your ability and interest in extending yourself beyond your core duties.
Ensure that the information you include in your CV has relevance. Be personal but not political (removing reference to race, nationality, marital status, children, religion or any political references), but keeping any external involvement in charitable organisations that show your community engagement at the forefront.
A lack of attention to detail around spelling, grammar and punctuation could undermine all the effort you have put into creating a perfect CV. Always ensure that you get someone else to review your CV at the end to check for any errors. Spell-check doesn't pick up everything and a fresh pair of eyes will always help.

Your CV should always reflect what you have actually done. Don't embellish your experience or your qualifications. If you have gaps in your career history, address them and don't gloss over them. If you leave it up to someone else to guess the reasons, their conclusions may not be favourable.
