A leading data-driven customer engagement and performance marketing services business is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join their Wellington-based team. This is an exceptional opportunity for you to play a pivotal role in designing, building, and automating robust data solutions that drive meaningful connections between brands and their customers.

What you'll do:

As a Senior Data Engineer based in Wellington, you will be entrusted with end-to-end responsibility for architecting robust data solutions that underpin customer engagement strategies. Your day-to-day activities will involve collaborating with both internal teams and external partners to translate complex business needs into scalable technical solutions. You will have the opportunity to shape project scopes from inception through delivery—ensuring each solution is fit for purpose in terms of usability, performance, functionality, availability, and compliance. By mentoring junior engineers and championing best practices across cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, you will help elevate the team's capabilities while maintaining high standards for security and governance. Your proactive approach to continuous improvement will see you identifying opportunities for automation and optimisation across the data lifecycle. Success in this role means not only delivering reliable data products but also contributing positively to a culture of inclusion, respect, safety, and shared achievement.

What you bring:

To excel as a Senior Data Engineer in this organisation’s Wellington office, you will bring a wealth of proven experience across all facets of modern data engineering. Your background should include significant exposure to cloud-based architectures—enabling you to design resilient systems that meet demanding business requirements. You will possess deep technical acumen in programming languages essential for building scalable pipelines while demonstrating fluency with distributed computing frameworks that power today’s most advanced analytics platforms. Your ability to manage complex projects from conception through delivery will be complemented by strong interpersonal skills—allowing you to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels. A keen eye for detail ensures your solutions are not only functional but also secure and compliant with governance standards. Experience working within Agile teams will enable you to adapt quickly as priorities evolve while maintaining rigorous documentation practices. Above all else, your commitment to nurturing others’ growth—through mentorship or knowledge sharing—will help foster an environment where everyone can thrive together.

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM or equivalent relevant experience demonstrating strong analytical foundations.
  • At least five years’ experience working in Big Data, Data Warehouse or Data Engineering roles on mainstream cloud service providers such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
  • Extensive hands-on proficiency in programming languages including Python, Scala, Java, and SQL for developing scalable data pipelines.
  • Proven expertise in designing, building and testing large-scale Big Data solutions handling structured, semi-structured and unstructured data using modern cloud technologies.
  • Practical experience with distributed data platform frameworks such as Apache Hadoop, Spark or Kafka for processing high-volume datasets efficiently.
  • Demonstrated ability in root cause analysis and performance tuning for optimising Big Data solutions across diverse environments.
  • Comprehensive understanding of data lifecycle management encompassing modelling & warehousing techniques; integration; access; storage; governance; security; metadata management.
  • Experience collaborating within highly skilled analytical teams on managing the full lifecycle of analytical data models as well as developing analytical layers for reporting purposes.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies (Scrum) alongside software development lifecycle processes including version control (GitHub) and documentation standards.
