Data Engineer - 6 month contract
You will provide technical leadership throughout the solution lifecycle—designing data models, optimising pipelines on both cloud and legacy platforms, maintaining meticulous documentation, and facilitating governance processes. Your role will require you to build strong relationships internally and externally while mentoring peers to foster capability growth.
What you'll do:
As a Data Engineer based in Wellington. - Provide technical guidance and leadership across the full lifecycle of solution components, ensuring continuous improvement of the data ecosystem.
- Design, implement, and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models for enterprise systems while ensuring alignment with programme objectives.
- Lead the development and optimisation of data pipelines across multiple cloud and legacy platforms to support robust information flows.
- Facilitate engagement with strategic and operational decision makers to ensure proposed changes are appropriately consulted and approved.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of data models, including version control and schema changes, ensuring accuracy and transparency.
- Mentor colleagues by providing architectural advice, driving best practices, and contributing to internal capability development within the organisation.
- Lead workshops for requirement gathering and facilitate governance approvals for changes within the data ecosystem.
- Build effective relationships across teams, business groups, external partners, and communities of practice to stay current with industry trends.
- Support team effectiveness by sharing knowledge, undertaking peer reviews, providing constructive feedback, and actively participating in performance development activities.
What you bring:
To excel as a Data Engineer in this role you will bring proven expertise across application support processes—investigating issues collaboratively with developers or network specialists—and advanced skills in systems design that translate business needs into user-friendly solutions. Your programming proficiency enables you to deliver well-engineered software components while your integration experience ensures seamless connectivity between subsystems. You are adept at planning rigorous tests that measure reliability and usability while maintaining thorough records for quality assurance purposes. Your research background allows you to generate valuable insights through innovative experimentation. Ideally you have designed BI solutions within Agile environments using tools like Azure DevOps or serverless platforms such as Microsoft Azure. Experience communicating complex issues effectively is essential as is your ability to nurture business relationships both internally and externally. Familiarity with Power Platform technologies or model-driven apps would be highly beneficial. Your commitment to ongoing professional development ensures you remain current with industry trends while your interpersonal skills foster positive team dynamics.
- Demonstrated experience in application support including investigation, resolution of issues, performance monitoring using management software tools.
- Proven ability in systems design—specifying structures that meet business needs while adhering to security requirements and corporate standards.
- Advanced programming skills in languages such as SAS or SQL; capable of designing, coding, testing, correcting complex programs from agreed specifications.
- Expertise in systems integration—designing interfaces between components/subsystems under technical direction; contributing to overall service design decisions.
- Comprehensive testing skills—planning, designing test cases/scripts/materials; interpreting results; maintaining defect registers; providing specialist advice on quality assurance.
- Research proficiency—developing original ideas; designing qualitative/quantitative data collection tools; presenting findings at conferences or through publication-quality papers.
- Experience designing BI solutions within Agile frameworks aligned with existing solution architectures.
- Familiarity with release management tools like Azure DevOps; experience with serverless architectures (e.g., Microsoft Azure).
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly across varied audiences; building effective business relationships within organisations.
- Experience using model-driven apps or Power Platform technologies (Dataverse/Power Automate/Power Apps) for automating data flows is highly advantageous.
