Legal Counsel
This SOE is seeking a legal counsel to join their legal division for 12-months. The position covers a variety of legal matters across multiple business areas. You will operate within a business that has global reach and goes beyond just legal, which will enable you to further develop excellent commercial business skills too.
About the role | Kōrero mō te tūranga
No two days are ever the same. The position has a commercial focus but beyond that, you will provide high-quality, practical legal advice across a wide range of matters from commercial contracts and compliance to privacy, risk management, and Official Information Act requests. You’ll work closely with internal teams and external lawyers to help this SOE meet its legal and regulatory obligations in New Zealand and overseas. Your days will include:
- Providing sound and commercially pragmatic legal advice and support on commercial activities, and generalist legal advice including marketing, OIA, and privacy
- Advising on regulatory and governance matters
- Drafting and advising on a wide range of commercial contracts
- Building strong relationships and trust with stakeholders throughout the business
- Working with external legal providers, issuing instructions or supporting the business to do so, testing advice and ensuring advice is pragmatic and commercially focussed
- Identifying, assessing, and managing legal risks across business activities
- Conducting training with the wider business (with support as required)
Full-time and part-time options will be considered for this 12-month fixed term position. We will also consider secondments.
About you | He kōrero mōu
- 3+ PQE with a current NZ practicing certificate (or eligibility to obtain one)
- Commercial experience ideally with some acquired in the private sector but a public sector background will be considered too
- Property and/or regulatory experience will be a bonus but is not essential
- Personable – you need to have strong relationship management skills
- Practical, solutions-focused, and comfortable working across multiple priorities.
