Their vision is to have a medical profession all New Zealanders can trust. The Council protects and promotes public health and safety in New Zealand by registering doctors to practise medicine and supporting doctors to practise medicine safely by setting standards, ensuring compliance with those standards, and taking action where concerns are raised.
They are currently looking for a Senior Legal Adviser to join their team of lawyers and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Council’s functions.
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
You will be involved in a huge variety of interesting and challenging work, including matters relating to New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, COVID-19 and novel issues involving expert evidence. There is a high degree of autonomy in this role and excellent opportunities for hands-on hearing and appellate-level advocacy with experienced senior advocates.
As a Senior Legal Adviser, you will come in to
- Manage prosecutions in various Courts and Tribunals
- Support investigations alongside the Professional Conduct Committees
- Mentor and supervise less experienced members of the legal team
- Provide advice to the Council, CE, Registrar, Deputy Registrar, and other members of management on legal matters which impact the Council
- Handle complex matters and input on strategic projects

- 7+ years of post-admission experience
- Ideally, you have a background in prosecutions or litigation
- Resilience and ability to deal with sensitive topics
- Confidence in engaging with people from all walks of life
- Strong oral and written communication skills
