Junior Barrister

Save job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled litigator to join a Barrister based in Auckland's CBD. This role offers the chance to work on complex civil/commercial litigation matters, contentious regulatory matters, and white-collar offending. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of matters and for a diverse range of clients.

This role is perfect for someone who wants to be more “hands-on” with their files, to work closely with an experienced litigator, and to get a chance to develop their skills as an advocate. The role will suit someone that enjoys the intellectual aspects of civil litigation and the challenges of advocacy in different settings, but is looking for an alternative way of practicing law to that offered in private practice.

What you'll do:

As a Junior Barrister within vibrant Chambers located in Auckland's CBD, you will be immersed in a variety of legal challenges. Your primary focus will be on civil and commercial litigation matters where you will conduct cases for an array of clients. This includes contractual, property and construction disputes, but you will also get a chance to engage with regulatory prosecutions and investigations. The work you will undertake is highly varied and interesting, and will give you exposure to many different legal issues. You will develop your legal skills by working alongside a highly regarded Barrister, but in a relaxed and flexible environment.

What you bring:

The ideal candidate for this role will possess a strong academic record and be comfortable with civil litigation procedure. Prior experience in Court, and in property, construction and insolvency disputes is a bonus but not a pre-requisite. You will have proven experience as a litigator and the ability to draft legal documents, undertake legal research and to trust your judgement. Your excellent interpersonal skills will enable you to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and the Court. You will also thrive in an open and informal office environment.

  • Two to four years of post-qualification experience; however, all candidates will be assessed on merit;
  • Proven litigation experience, ideally in a well-regard private practice firm;
  • Familiarity with civil procedure and experienced in legal drafting and research;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate effectively with clients;
  • Strong academic record;

About the employer:

The Barrister sits within a vibrant Chambers office based in Auckland's CBD, and has a breadth of litigation experience in both in the civil and criminal jurisdiction. The working environment is relaxed and flexible, with an emphasis on the quality of work that is produced. This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic and varied environment where you can further develop your skills and career.
