Senior Associate
The Senior Associate Lawyer is responsible for providing expert legal services in family law matters, with a primary focus on relationship cases, including divorce, separation, spousal support, and relationship property disputes. The role requires a high level of legal expertise, client management skills, and the ability to handle complex cases effectively. Key Responsibilities * Provide legal advice and representation in matters relating to relationship property, dissolution of marriage, spousal maintenance, and domestic agreements. * Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents, including prenuptial agreements, cohabitation agreements, and separation agreements. * Represent clients in court proceedings, mediation, and settlement negotiations. * Provide expert legal services to clients on child-related matters, including child support, custody and guardianship disputes, care and protection proceedings, youth justice cases, and adoption. * Develop legal strategies tailored to individual client needs and objectives. * Stay updated on relevant family law legislation, case law, and legal precedents in New Zealand. * Collaborate with colleagues, junior lawyers, and legal support staff to ensure effective case management. * Maintain strong professional relationships with clients, ensuring clear communication and support throughout legal proceedings. * Participate in professional development activities and contribute to the firm’s family law practice. * Assist in mentoring junior legal staff and supporting their professional development.
Required Qualifications & Skills
• Education: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent legal degree.
• Licensing: Admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.
• Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience practising family law, with a strong focus on relationship cases.
• Legal Knowledge: In-depth understanding of New Zealand family law, including the Property (Relationships) Act 1976 and Family Violence Act 2018.
• Advocacy & Negotiation: Strong courtroom advocacy and negotiation skills, with experience in mediation and dispute resolution.
• Client Management: Ability to build trust and rapport with clients while handling sensitive legal matters with empathy and professionalism.
• Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present legal arguments clearly and effectively.
• Organisational Skills: Ability to manage multiple cases efficiently and meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
• Leadership: Experience mentoring and supervising junior lawyers or legal support staff.
