Senior Project Engineer
An exciting opportunity exists for a Senior Project Engineer to join a respected public sector organisation in Auckland. Lead a talented team delivering the design, construction, renewal, and seismic strengthening of bus, rail, ferry, and parking assets. Drive impactful projects, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and contribute to a professional Centre of Excellence in project management, shaping safe and seamless journeys for thousands of customers daily.
As a Senior Project Engineer in Auckland, you will lead teams delivering design, construction, and renewal of public transport infrastructure, including seismic strengthening and parking assets. You’ll manage client-side project delivery via third-party suppliers, ensuring projects meet quality, safety, budget, and timeline targets. Build strong stakeholder relationships, oversee budgets, contribute to the Project Management Centre of Excellence, and champion best-practice project delivery.
What you'll do:

Manage multidisciplinary teams to deliver new and renewed PT infrastructure projects.

Lead project management from concept through construction, including tendering and consents.

Ensure projects meet quality, safety, budget, and schedule requirements.

Build relationships with stakeholders, contractors, and community groups.

Contribute to professional development and knowledge sharing via the CoE.

Maintain accurate reporting and support strategic collaboration across projects.
What you'll bring:
You have significant experience managing complex public transport or infrastructure projects, including renewals and seismic strengthening. A tertiary qualification in engineering, construction, or project management is essential, with PRINCE2 or PMP desirable. You are confident leading large teams, navigating complex stakeholder environments, and managing budgets effectively. Strong interpersonal, planning, and communication skills are key, alongside proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Construction, or Project Management.

10+ years’ experience in design, investigation, or construction project management.

5+ years’ experience managing large teams in complex or political environments.

Proven project and contract management expertise, including tenders.

Knowledge of local government operations, statutory requirements, and financial management.

Strong leadership, mentoring, and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams.
