Manager Asset Planning

Save job

This pivotal role offers you the chance to lead a talented team of engineers, analysts, and planners in shaping the future of essential infrastructure. You will be at the forefront of developing high-quality asset management plans that underpin operational excellence and drive industry best practices.

What you'll do:

As Manager Asset Planning, you will play an instrumental role in shaping how critical assets are managed now and into the future. Your day-to-day activities will involve leading a skilled team through complex planning cycles while ensuring that all outputs meet legislative requirements and reflect best practice principles.

You will work closely with colleagues across multiple departments to ensure that asset plans are not only technically sound but also practical for operational delivery. By leveraging your analytical skills and experience in lifecycle costing, you will guide investment decisions that balance risk with long-term value.

Your ability to build strong relationships both internally and externally will be key in aligning asset strategies with broader organisational goals. Success in this role means creating an environment where your team feels supported to grow professionally while consistently delivering high-quality outcomes that benefit communities across the Wellington region.

  • Provide inspirational leadership to a diverse team of engineers, analysts, and planners by coaching, mentoring, and supporting their professional growth within a collaborative environment.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive Strategic Asset Management Plans (SAMP) and Asset Management Plans (AMPs), ensuring they are informed by reliable condition data, growth projections, and service requirements.
  • Embed best practice asset management frameworks throughout the organisation, positioning your team as a centre of excellence for planning and stewardship.
  • Guide investment planning by ensuring all asset planning outputs are evidence-based and provide a solid foundation for business case development and prioritisation of funding requests.
  • Apply advanced performance analytics, condition monitoring, and risk assessment methodologies to inform maintenance strategies and renewal programmes.
  • Foster enduring relationships with internal teams such as Operations, Strategy & Planning Groups, as well as external stakeholders including consultants, client councils, regulators, and service providers.
  • Oversee cost centre budget management by developing accurate forecasts, tracking expenditures against budgets, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and ensuring compliance with financial policies.

What you bring:

To excel as Manager Asset Planning you will bring extensive experience from infrastructure environments where you have successfully led technical teams through complex planning challenges. Your educational background will be complemented by deep familiarity with international standards such as ISO 55001.

You will have demonstrated your ability to develop comprehensive asset management plans that satisfy both regulatory requirements and operational realities. Your interpersonal skills will enable you to foster trust-based relationships across all levels of the organisation as well as with key external stakeholders.

A natural collaborator who thrives on supporting others growth; you will be adept at translating analytical insights into clear recommendations that inform strategic investment decisions. Your passion for continuous improvement combined with your commitment to health & safety ensures you create an environment where both people and assets can thrive.
