An exciting opportunity for an early‑career professional with governance, legal, or policy experience to support judicial leadership at the heart of New Zealand’s constitutional framework. This role offers exposure to judicial governance, strategy, and project work within a unique and highly respected institution.

The Office of the Chief Justice Te Tari Toko Te Tumu Whakawā (known as “Te Tari”) supports the judicial branch of government, including the Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal, and Chief Judge of the High Court, in their leadership and administrative responsibilities.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

Reporting into the governance function within Te Tari, you will provide high‑quality advice and practical support across judicial governance, strategy, and project work. This role plays a key part in supporting judicial leadership and ensuring effective governance arrangements across the courts.

You will contribute to a range of governance‑related initiatives, working across priorities that require sound judgement, strong coordination skills, and an ability to respond to shifting demands. The work is varied and will suit someone who enjoys working in a fast‑paced environment while supporting senior stakeholders.

This is a small and highly collaborative team, where you will have the opportunity to work independently while also engaging closely with colleagues and stakeholders across the judiciary. Te Tari are seeking someone who brings a thoughtful, adaptable approach and who values discretion, collaboration, and professionalism.

Mōhou ake | About you

1–2 years’ experience in a governance, legal, or policy‑related role, or experience that demonstrates a strong interest in transitioning into governance.

Experience working in fast‑paced environments with changing priorities.

Confidence engaging with a range of stakeholders and contributing to collaborative working relationships.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with good attention to detail.

Ability to organise work, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy and confidentiality.

An interest in judicial governance, public sector decision‑making, or the justice system.

Experience within the justice or public sector is considered a bonus, but not essential.
