The challenge
Following discussions with the Group CFO, European Managing Director, Global HR Director and European HR Director, Robert Walters were tasked with sourcing a technically competent and capable European Finance Director. This individual needed to support the European MD while managing multiple stakeholders and teams across several countries, including the UK, Netherlands, Denmark and Germany.
The successful candidate required a proven track record within reputable organisations, alongside a strong technical finance background. Key areas of expertise included IFRS, international finance, consolidation, audit, and P&L management. In addition, they needed to provide commercial support to growth areas of the business, including developing and enhancing Power BI reporting capabilities.
From a cultural perspective, the individual needed to demonstrate a strong team ethic and thrive within a non-hierarchical structure. They were expected to be a critical thinker, able to operate at pace while bringing fresh ideas and perspectives. Acting as a trusted sparring partner to the European MD was also a critical component of the role.
Finally, the candidate needed the ability to deliver strategically while remaining hands-on—willing to engage with the wider finance team and operate at a detailed level when required.
Setting up the partnership
Robert Walters partnered closely with the senior leadership team to define the requirements of the role and align on expectations from the outset. Clear communication channels were established with key stakeholders, ensuring ongoing collaboration throughout the process.
A structured and focused search strategy was agreed, with the ambition to deliver the full recruitment process—from initial engagement through to accepted offer—within a three-month timeframe. This required a proactive and disciplined approach, combining market mapping, targeted outreach and rigorous assessment to identify and secure the right individual within the defined deadline.
The solution
We began by implementing a data-driven candidate targeting strategy to identify and engage the highest-calibre talent for this critical hire. Approaching the search on a retained basis, we deployed a full suite of sourcing methodologies to maximise reach and impact. This included a branded premium advertising solution, alongside the expertise of our in-house analytics team, who conducted a deep-dive search across social platforms such as LinkedIn. We also leveraged our established internal database and trusted third-party referral network, including auditors and banking contacts, to access both active and passive candidates.
To ensure a seamless and efficient process, we established a clear and structured recruitment timeline with defined milestones, including longlisting, shortlisting, first- and second-stage interviews, and assessment stages. This disciplined approach, combined with continuous stakeholder communication, ensured alignment at every stage and enabled us to successfully deliver the assignment within the agreed three-month timeframe.
