Robert Walters are thrilled to be working exclusively with the Queenstown Lakes District Council in appointing a Legal Counsel. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to provide first-rate legal services across a diverse array of subjects including commercial contracting, property and reserves, local government legislation, resource management issues, civil disputes and litigation. The successful candidate will play a vital role within the wider legal team, operating as a unified service delivery unit and fostering strong relationships with external legal providers.
What you'll do: As Legal Counsel, you will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive legal services throughout the organisation. Working closely with the General Counsel on legal matters across commercial contracting, property and reserves, local government legislation, resource management issues and civil disputes and litigation, your role will encompass:
• Providing timely, high-quality and relevant legal services • Fostering strong working relationships with external legal providers • Undertaking results-oriented legal research and opinions • Overseeing property and commercial transactions • Demonstrating efficient and effective file management in litigation • Ensuring Council's adherence to all statutory and regulatory provisions and Council policies applicable to its business operations
What you bring: The ideal candidate for this role will bring a wealth of knowledge and will be well-equipped to handle a variety of legal matters. You will have:
• A tertiary bachelor qualification in law along with a current New Zealand practising certificate • 2-4 years’ PQE in the areas of local government, public, commercial, litigation and/or resource management law • The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal customers and legal service providers • A proven ability to assume responsibility and use initiative to prioritise tasks effectively under pressure • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral • Residence in Queenstown currently or a willingness to relocate
