Intermediate or Senior Legal Counsel

This public sector organisation is seeking an intermediate or senior lawyer to join its legal team for an initial fixed-term contract until 30 June 2027, with the possibility of extension. Ideally you will be based in Wellington, Christchurch or Auckland, but we will consider other locations.

The opportunity | Te tūranga

Working closely with a senior lawyer and external counsel, this position focuses on reviewing, remediating, and negotiating contracts. Work will include:

• Information sharing agreements and schedules.
• Analysis of supplier contracts for alignment to new information sharing and cyber security requirements.
• Drafting of commercial contracts and negotiation between parties.

You’ll work directly with stakeholders, suppliers, and commercial/procurement teams, ensuring legal support is seamlessly integrated into the broader program of work. While you’ll have access to external counsel and a senior lawyer internally for guidance on complex matters, you’ll also enjoy autonomy in managing your workload.

This role offers flexibility in location and working arrangements, as well as the chance to contribute to a long-term program addressing critical issues in this space.

About you | Mōhou ake

• LLB and current NZ practising certificate (or the ability to obtain one).
• Intermediate or senior level of post-admission experience.
• Commercial and contracts legal experience is essential – you must have experience drafting contracts.
• A good grounding in privacy law.
• Pragmatic with strong stakeholder management skills.
