Senior Legal Counsel
This public sector organisation is seeking a highly experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join its legal team for an initial 12-month fixed-term with the possibility of extension (there is flexibility in duration if you would prefer a shorter term too). You can be based in Wellington, Christchurch or Auckland.

The opportunity | Te tūranga
This position will you the chance to work across some of the country’s most significant technology and digital transformation programmes. You will contribute to projects spanning major enterprise platforms, cloud modernisation, and large-scale procurement initiatives all while working closely with senior stakeholders across technology, procurement, and business teams. This position offers a strong pipeline of commercial legal work and the opportunity to take ownership of national transformation projects.
You will take the lead in providing legal support for complex technology RFPs and procurement processes, guiding projects from initial structuring through supplier selection, contracting, and implementation. Work will include but not be limited to:
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial and technology agreements that underpin major transformation initiatives.
- Advising on contractual structures including commercial terms, risk allocation, liability, indemnities, warranties, and service levels.
- Partnering closely with procurement specialists, technology teams, programme managers, and senior business stakeholders to deliver integrated legal support.
- Advise on privacy issues, data protection requirements, and information governance.
About you | Mōhou ake
- LLB and current NZ practising certificate (or the ability to obtain one)
- 8+ PQE of commercial law with technology experience, ideally with some experience acquired in-house.
- Strong commercial contracting, drafting and negotiating skills across complex agreements involving technology platforms or enterprise systems.
- Demonstrated expertise leading RFPs, procurement processes, and supplier negotiations.
- Experience dealing with privacy issues and data protection requirements will be a bonus.
