Management Accountant
A medium sized Government organisation is seeking a Management Accountant. This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in driving organisational performance through high-quality financial planning, reporting, analysis and business partnering.
Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will lead budgeting, forecasting and management reporting processes while building trusted partnerships with senior leaders across the organisation. You will provide strategic financial advice that supports informed decision-making and ensures the Ministry meets its financial responsibilities.
What you'll be doing
Financial Leadership & Management Accounting
- Lead the annual budgeting, forecasting and re-forecasting processes.
- Coordinate and oversee monthly management reporting across the Ministry.
- Partner with business leaders to develop budgets and financial plans aligned to strategic priorities.
- Provide proactive financial advice and expertise to budget managers and Deputy Secretaries.
- Prepare monthly financial reporting for assigned portfolios.
- Consolidate organisation-wide financial results and provide insightful analysis and commentary for the Executive Leadership Team.
- Prepare quarterly financial reporting
- Support the development of business cases and budget bids.
- Undertake financial reviews and analysis of Crown and Statutory entities.
- Identify, monitor and escalate financial risks and emerging issues.
- Contribute to strategic projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
Business Partnering & Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong, trusted relationships with budget managers, senior leaders and executives.
- Deliver timely, accurate and customer-focused financial information and advice.
- Influence business decisions through meaningful financial insights and recommendations.
- Coach, mentor and support the ongoing development of finance team members.
What you'll bring
To be successful in this role, you will be a confident finance professional who combines strong technical expertise with exceptional stakeholder management skills.
You will have:
- Chartered Accountant (or an equivalent professional qualification) preferred.
- Proven experience in management accounting, budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting.
- Strong strategic thinking and systems-thinking capability.
- In-depth knowledge of financial reporting standards, including NZ IPSAS, NZ IFRS and GAAP.
- Experience working with financial management systems.
- Relationship-building and business partnering skills.
- Strong analytical, communication and influencing skills.
- The ability to translate complex financial information into meaningful business insights.
- Knowledge of government processes and the public sector environment (advantageous).
