Deciding whether or not to move on from your current role can be extremely difficult, particularly if you have been with the business for a long time and get along with your colleagues.
However, don’t let the security of your role stifle the opportunities that may be waiting for you elsewhere. Chances are, if you answer no to any of the following questions it may be time to take the plunge and look for a new opportunity. Top 5 questions to ask yourself:
1. Do you know where you're going?
If career progression is important to you, you need to be aware of the opportunities that exist for you in your current organisation and whether there is a succession plan in place. If there’s little chance for promotion, it may be time to look for career advancement elsewhere.
2. Is your workplace free of office politics?
Everybody has the right to feel safe and happy at work. Don’t be afraid to look for a more positive work environment if you're not happy where you are
3. Do you feel supported and inspired by your leadership team?
No matter how dedicated and hard working you are, it can be very difficult to achieve business objectives with poor leadership or bad management practices in place. Think about whether this is something you can change or if it’s time to move on.
4. Do you still believe in the company values/mission statement?
Make sure your values align with the company's values. It’s very difficult to work for a company if you don’t believe in what they have to offer.
5. Do you enjoy your work?
It’s a simple question but we rarely ask ourselves if we actually enjoy our work. It’s very easy to stay in a role purely because the alternative seems too difficult. However, if you no longer enjoy the work you do you’re probably not performing at your peak.
