Age discrimination, inter-generational conflict and unconscious bias are common in Australian and New Zealand workplaces, according to our research.
Generation Gaps? Mythbusting assumptions about age in the workforce includes the findings of research undertaken in March 2017, surveying 937 hiring managers and more than 1,573 professionals across Australia and New Zealand.
Key research findings include:
- 40% of Australian and New Zealand professionals say that they have been discriminated against during a job interview, because of their age.
- More than half (58%) of Australian and New Zealand hiring managers say they have seen colleagues overlooked for promotion or career progression due to their age.
- Almost half (47%) of Australian and New Zealand professionals say that they have experienced conflict between the different generations in the workplace.
- 84% of baby boomers say that they prefer exploring new ways of working over the tried and tested approach - yet only 5% of hiring managers say that being "open to new ideas" is one of the strongest characteristics in older professionals.
- Professionals across the generations share many things in common, including a strong appetite for innovation, a preference for collaborative working, and a heavy reliance on technology. And professionals of all ages are keenly aware of the importance of lifelong learning.
