Senior Advisor - Investment

Save job

In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in shaping investment strategies that underpin critical organisational initiatives, directly contributing to the delivery of fair and accessible treatment for all New Zealanders.

What You'll Do:

  • Provide comprehensive investment advice and analysis to support decision-making on business cases, including economic and financial assessments for various proposals.
  • Develop robust investing and financing options analyses such as own versus lease versus as-a-service models, ensuring value for money through cost/benefit and whole-of-life cycle evaluations.
  • Deliver high-quality financial advice to governance committees overseeing portfolios, programmes, and projects, enabling well-informed decisions that align with organisational objectives.
  • Support both strategic and operational planning processes by assessing budgetary implications of new initiatives and advising on resource allocation.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance investment data quality and information systems by collaborating with Finance, Property, and Digital teams to implement improvements.
  • Advise senior managers on the organisation's investment position, highlighting potential impacts of key decisions and offering recommendations for optimal outcomes.
  • Share best practice investment analysis techniques with colleagues in the Finance Team to build capability and foster continuous improvement across the unit.
  • Work closely with Property and Digital teams to develop performance measures, targets, and reports that ensure compliance with Treasury requirements and support long-term investment intentions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the organisation to drive continuous improvement in investment systems and planning processes, aligning practices with Cabinet and Treasury guidelines.
  • Contribute positively to team culture by sharing knowledge, supporting colleagues in meeting priorities, being receptive to feedback, and assisting with broader team objectives as required.

Experience Required:

  • A recognised degree in business or management (or related discipline) along with a commitment to ongoing professional development is essential for success in this role.
  • Thorough understanding of best practice methodologies for investment analysis including value for money assessments, whole-of-life cycle costing, advanced financial risk evaluation, and options analysis is required.
  • Proven experience delivering high-quality investment advice within a public sector context—particularly involving business case development using frameworks such as Better Business Cases—is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement effective investment management strategies that contribute towards achieving organisational goals through robust frameworks, policies, or programmes is important.
  • Strong analytical skills enabling you to critically assess complex data sets and produce clear recommendations tailored to diverse audiences are vital.
  • Excellent communication skills allowing you to convey technical information accurately while adapting your approach based on stakeholder needs are necessary.
  • Experience engaging collaboratively with both internal teams (such as Finance or Property) and external partners (including government agencies or auditors) is expected.
  • Well-developed planning and organisational abilities ensuring timely delivery of work outputs at consistently high standards are crucial.
  • A track record of supporting continuous improvement initiatives within financial or investment systems—identifying opportunities for enhancement—is advantageous.
