What motivates women in tech? We speak to Sarah Dueweke, who was awarded a six month tech internship at Westpac. Partnering with Westpac, Robert Walters helped facilitate the internship at the WREDA Tech Ruck in Wellington.
What sparked your interest in the tech industry?
I didn’t start out in the industry, but I was ready for a career change. Through a local Meetup group I heard about efforts to encourage more women into the tech industry. It was really inspiring and I began learning to code at home for fun.
A few weeks later I enrolled in Enspiral Dev Academy's 18 week Dev "Bootcamp" which was a brilliant experience. When the course finished my EDA team entered into the WREDA Tech Ruck where my team had to develop an idea for NZ Rugby. I was the lucky winner of a six month internship at Westpac through Robert Walters.
What do you enjoy about working in the industry?
I love the logic of coding, it’s a lot like learning a new language. The open source community is welcoming and supportive, making it a great place to learn and try new things.
The culture of the tech industry is changing and it's breaking down stereotypes. Development teams work in Agile environments now and collaborate to benefit from their shared skill sets. You learn so much from your colleagues when you’re coding in pairs. People are always finding better ways to do things and challenging the way you think.
What’s next for you?
I want to work in a company that devotes resources to the technologies they use. Working as a developer means I will always be learning. With the rate the tech industry is developing in Wellington, I'd like to work for a company whose technologies develop in turn. People are pushing to make Wellington a tech hub, which is something I'm eager to be a part of.

Westpac has recently invested significant resource into technological developments, so having the opportunity to be an intern is a really exciting first step for me.
