Robert Walters was privileged to host a special leadership lunch, which brought together industry professionals and sports icons to explore the essence of leadership both on and off the field. The lunch was hosted at our Auckland office on 16 August, following a successful evening of celebrations at the inaugural New Zealand Leadership Awards, hosted in partnership with New Zealand Rugby.
The event featured Fa’alogo Tana Umaga, a New Zealand rugby legend whose leadership journey extends far beyond his time as All Blacks captain from 2004 to 2005. As the current head coach of Moana Pasifika, Tana has transitioned from the high-pressure demands of elite playing to the equally challenging realms of coaching and entrepreneurship. During the discussion, Tana discussed how leaders who he personally looked up to, both on and off the field, played a significant role in shaping his journey of becoming an All Black and later All Blacks captain. He delved into the challenges of leading a high performing team that is often under public scrutiny and let us in on some of his humorous behind-the-scenes All Blacks anecdotes.
Tana emphasised the importance of adaptability and resilience—traits that have been central to his success both on the field and in his business ventures. He shared how evolving as a leader requires constant learning and the ability to balance tradition with innovation. His reflections provided the audience with valuable lessons on leadership’s multifaceted nature, highlighting the significance of authenticity and the courage to take risks in driving long-term success.
We were also privileged to host an engaging Q&A session with current All Blacks stars Ardie Savea, Fletcher Newell, and Tyrel Lomax. The players discussed the role of mentorship, the influence of strong role models, and how they continuously work on their personal growth. Their candid and humbled reflections provided actionable takeaways applicable to both professional and personal leadership journeys.
This gathering was an opportunity to learn from some respected names in New Zealand rugby and a chance for finalists and judges from the awards to reconnect. The combination of thought-provoking conversations and networking made the event a memorable follow-up to the awards.
