Are you considering a move abroad and looking for a new job? Congratulations! Starting a new job in a new country is a highly rewarding and exciting adventure. However, it can also be a little daunting. Here are some top tips from our ICM team to help you prepare for the move and make a successful transition:
Connect with our overseas teams who specialize in your industry and the country you're moving to. They can provide valuable insights and advice on everything from the job market to salaries. Find our office finder with this link for New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Use social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with your peers in the industry and country you're moving to. They can give you a better understanding of the local job market and introduce you to potential employers.
Social media platforms like Facebook, have valuable groups that you are able to join to connect with fellow expats e.g. Kiwi’s in London and New Zealand Working Holiday Visa. These groups have a wealth of advice and will often include Q&A’s, job opportunities, call outs and events.
Before you moving abroad be sure to research the country’s culture. This will help you to understand what is expected of you and avoid any cultural misunderstandings. Once applying for positions make sure to check the company's website, social media channels, and employee reviews to have a well-rounded understanding of what to expect.
Make sure you have all the necessary documents and paperwork in order before you move. This includes your passport, visa, and any work permits or certifications that are required.
Starting a new job in a new country can be challenging, but it can also be a great opportunity to learn and grow. Be open-minded and willing to try new things, even if they are outside your comfort zone. Consider starting a new hobby to meet people outside of work. It will take time to adjust to a new country so be patient with yourself.
Remember, moving abroad for a new job is an exciting adventure. So, embrace the culture, explore your new surroundings, and enjoy the journey!
