Top tips to make you stand out in the tech sector

No one can refute the importance of performing well at an interview. However, in a competitive technology job market you'll need to really stand out from the crowd to get the best job. Here are our top tips for standing out as a candidate in the tech sector.

1. Attention to detail

It may sound obvious, but too often quality technology professionals are let down by their CVs. Remember, first impressions often last, so it’s vital to proofread your CV several times and have someone else read it before pressing send. Check for spelling and grammar errors, accuracy of information, and proper formatting. Remove any irrelevant information and focus on highlighting your key skills and experience.

2. Tailor your CV to the role

For employers, it’s not hard to spot a CV being spammed across a range of organisations. Hiring managers want to know why you want to work for them, and they will expect this to be mentioned in your CV and cover letter.

To stand out from the crowd, make it personal, personalise your CV by mentioning attributes and interests that align with the company's culture, in addition to your qualifications, skills, and accomplishments. Keep it concise and relevant, imagining yourself in the role and showcasing where you can add value.

3. Choose your recruiter wisely

Recruiters are often the most well-connected in the industry when it comes to jobs. However not all are the same. Partner with a specialist technology recruiter who has strong connections within the industry. They can represent you to the most suitable employers and keep you updated with the best opportunities in the market. Build an open and responsive relationship with your recruiter from the beginning.

4. Maintain a professional online presence

Social media plays a significant role in hiring decisions. Ensure that your online profiles align with the job you are seeking. Your professional social media profile should complement your CV and require regular updates to make the right impression. Use professional social networks like LinkedIn to showcase your experience and connect with like-minded professionals.

5. Be prepared

Preparing for the interview can not only help you land your dream job but give you the best possible insight for what to expect on-the-job. Thoroughly research the company you are interviewing with. This will not only help you perform well in the interview but also provide valuable insights into whether the company is the right fit for you.

6. Network, network, network

Ever heard the saying, ‘It’s not all about what you know, but who you know’?  Networking is essential in the tech industry. Engage in professional dialogue through conferences, join relevant social media groups, connect with specialist recruiters, and reach out to alumni groups. Actively participating in networking opportunities demonstrates your passion and commitment to your career.
